Who is Leu?
 BY: Marilyn Welch
 Mascoutah Historical Society

Many times when someone is talking to another about our Leu Civic Center and referring to it by name, the question is asked, "Who is Leu?"
There are not too many people around who can tell you much about the lives of Dr. and Mrs. Leu. Even those Mascoutans in their 75+ years, who knew of them, do not remember many details of their lives.

Robert C. Leu was born in Highland on January 1, 1875. His father, at the age of two years, had emigrated from Switzerland with his parents. Robert grew up on a farm in St. Rose township, Clinton County. Robert was always interested in animals, especially race horses. He became a veterinary surgeon and opened his practice in Mascoutah. Here he met Elsie Perrin, born 1886, the daughter of Nicklaus and Emelia. They lived on a farm north of town.
